About Jesca
Jesca inspires the world through her powerful storytelling and radiant smile. Born into extreme poverty, she spent her early years as a street child in Uganda after the sudden loss of her mother. She found herself in a house full of other children, all banding together to survive. One day, a woman from Colorado, filming a documentary, crossed paths with Jesca and was so moved by her story that she chose to drop everything and move in with them—staying for seven years. In a remarkable turn of events, this woman adopted Jesca, forever changing the course of her life. Despite facing significant learning gaps, Jesca rose to become the Colorado State Champion in Poetry Out Loud, a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts competition, during high school. After overcoming a difficult journey through life and academics, Jesca graduated from Westmont College in 2025. She will now be joining Teach for America to work in inner-city public schools, where she is determined to inspire young students to work hard and persevere, even when the odds seem insurmountable.
Speaking
Jesca's life has been shaped by numerous challenges that she has courageously overcome. From a young age, she accompanied her mother to fundraisers and film festivals, experiencing a life that spanned the globe. Throughout high school, Jesca shared her insights and experiences by speaking at her school chapel during both her junior and senior years. In college, she was given the opportunity to tell her story during Augustinian Weekend at Westmont College. Today, Jesca is determined to use her voice to inspire and empower the next generation.
Poetry
While living in Uganda, Jesca learned English by watching High School Musical over-and-over again...and even then now, according to all the academic testing, she only has the working memory of an 8 year old. But one of her greatest accomplishment to date is using Poetry to overcome her weaknesses. Jesca is the current Colorado State Champion for Poetry Out Loud.
